I started creating my Blob Series as an evolution of my personal experience with acrylic paints and gel mediums. I wanted to see how I could create works of art without the use of canvas and be able to manipulate the flow of the paint to create different patterns. The process projects interesting textures and visual dimensions, building up imaginary and playful paths. While creating the blobs, I choose music that will help me define the combination of colors to use, and also the movement and rhythms that will shape up the finished piece.
After all the materials are prepared and I have poured them into a tray, and used sculpting tools to move the paint around, I grab the tray and dance the paints to the sound of the music to let the work run free and see how it comes to life at its own pace. The piece then becomes an unpredictable creation. You don’t know what's going to come out, and you will never get two identical results. When I move the tray to the rhythm of the music, music and paint merge and become one.
By doing this, after it dries, I was able to hold my creations in my hands, without any surface at all. This unique experience allowed me to design an installation that was presented at the Curated Show Re-Workings, 2017 in Curators Voice Art Projects Gallery in Wynwood, FL, getting an Honorable Mention Award.
After realizing that I could hold my creations, I decided to wrap them on canvases, and that's how my second Blob Series was born. The interesting part of this is that I could wrap the painting on the canvas without literally painting the canvas.
To continue mastering my technique, I decided to use them to create shapes, in this case orbs, that could be used as mixed media pasted on a canvas or other surfaces. That is how my minimalist Floating Orbs came to life.
I tend to create bodies of work by doing a series with the same concept and technique running through each piece. This allows me to explore and discover new ways to develop the technique in different scenarios. The potentials are infinite and the sense of discovery is so exciting to me, and that is why I do what I do.
